Officials say quake claimed 41,000 lives

BEIJING, May 21 (UPI) -- The official death toll from last week's earthquake in China rose to 41,353 Wednesday, government officials said.

In addition, the Information Office of the State Council said 274,683 people were injured and another 32,666 were missing after the May 12 earthquake, reported Xinhua, China's official news agency.

The Department of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army said rescuers evacuated 396,811 people, including 6,452 survivors extricated from rubble, from the affected areas in China's Sichuan province, the news agency said.

Chinese rescue teams, completing their task in 24 hours as required by the country's leaders, reached all 1,044 villages in the province.

Among the latest survivors pulled from the rubble was a woman found in debris at a hydroelectric plant in Hongbai township Wednesday, CNN reported.

More than 5 million buildings collapsed and another 21 million structures were damaged in the earthquake, reports said.

While power has been restored to most of the affected areas, Beichuan county remained dark and Hongyuan lost electricity because of aftershocks, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said.

Government officials said 11 miles of the than 17 miles of damaged roads have been repaired and reopened to traffic.
