MOSCOW, May 21 (UPI) -- Ryan Giggs scored in the seventh round of penalty kicks Wednesday, securing Manchester United's 6-5 shootout win over Chelsea for the Champions League title.
It was the first all-English final in the prestigious soccer competition and it proved to be a dramatic one.
After regulation and overtime ended in a 1-1 tie, the marathon shootout took place in a pouring rain.
Chelsea captain John Terry had a chance to make the clinching shot, but slipped on the wet turf and missed the net. After Giggs scored, United goaltender Edwin van der Sar made his only save on an attempt by Nicolas Anelka to win it.
It was the third Champions League title for Manchester United, which also edged Chelsea to capture the Premier League this year.
Giggs entered the game in the 87th minute. It was his 759th appearance for United, breaking the team record previously held by Sir Bobby Charlton.
