INVERNESS, Nova Scotia, May 19 (UPI) -- Fishermen in Nova Scotia ended a four-day crab protest Sunday, dropping their blockade of Inverness harbor and allowing four New Brunswick vessels to leave.

The blockade ended with a land-and-water rally, the Cape Breton Post reported. Hundreds of supporters lined the wharf in Inverness while others were on fishing boats from other harbors.

The four New Brunswick boats all had permits to catch crab. The Nova Scotia lobster fishermen were trying to put pressure on the government to give them crab permits, as well.

"We're trying to take the high road on this, so as of now, I think we're going to take the blockade down and New Brunswick boats are free to fish -- they're welcome to stay in this harbor -- there will be nothing done to them," said Lawrence MacLellan, one of the protest leaders. "Hopefully in the future we can fish alongside them."
