WARSAW, Poland, May 20 (UPI) -- Commercial cod fishing in Poland has been temporarily banned, the government's Agriculture Minister said Tuesday.

Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki signed the fishing ban, which may be lifted later in the year, Radio Poland announced.

The European Union imposed the ban on the taking of depleted cod stocks, although it does not apply to boats under 12 meters long, Radio Poland reported.

Polish fisherman are close to reaching their limit for 2008, the report said.
