Cape Lookout has installed anti-virus software on our Mail
system to prevent the spreading of email virus' to and from our
customers.
How does it work?...
The anti-virus system will scan attachments for known virus' and block
the virus from being sent. It will then notify the sender and the
receiver of the attempted virus transmission via email. This system will
not remedy your PC if it is already infected! Please review the
information below to better help you understand what a virus is and the
next steps to take.
What is a virus?...
Computer viruses are small programs that can reproduce themselves and
spread from one computer to another when people exchange files. Like
human viruses, computer viruses spread quickly and are difficult to get
rid of. Some viruses do more than fill up space on your computer's hard
drive. Viruses can destroy critical data on your computer. While some
viruses may only display messages or images, they can also destroy
files, format your hard drive, or cause other kinds of damage. If the
virus doesn’t contain a damage routine, it can still cause trouble by
taking up storage space and memory, and downgrading the overall
performance of your computer.
How is it being sent from my
account?...
They can attach themselves to just about any type of file and
are spread as files, that are copied, sent from person to person. Most
of the time you are unaware of the process, this is how virus' move so
quickly throughout the internet.
How can I stop it?...
The most common way to prevent your computer from being
infected is by installing and frequently updating virus software on your
PC. The two most common types are McAfee and Norton. Keeping your "virus
definitions" up-to-date will help in the battle against new virus'.
