Black bear swimming

A big black bear swims from one shore to the next past us in a canoe.

Canebrake Rattlesnake

Canebrake rattlesnake caught for a picture and released.

Otter

River otters on the prowl mean there are fish around.

Prothonotary Warbler

This warbler had slammed into one of the porch windows and momentarily stunned himself. We were able to get a photograph of him before he recovered and flew away.

Double-crested cormorant

The word cormorant is derived through French from a Latin phrase meaning 'sea crow'. In Carteret County these birds are often referred to as "Core Sound lawyers."

Brown pelicans

It is truly wonderful to see so many young and adult brown pelicans in Carteret County.

Butterfly Weed

"The acknowledged queen of all the Milkweeds is the gorgeous Orange Milkweed, often called Butterfly weed because of its blossoms' attractiveness to insects of many kinds... It is an interesting fact that many Orange Milkweeds have their individual times for blooming."
