Ft. Macon Friends Will Hold Tour Guide
Intro In
February
Interested in local history? Want to
know more about Ft. Macon—one
of the gems of the area with 200 years of storied events and one of the
most
visited places in North
Carolina?
Do you think you might enjoy talking with visitors while taking them on
informal walking tours around those hallowed grounds?
If this piques your
interest at all, and you have
just a few
hours a month to spare, you are a candidate to become one of the
Friends of Ft.
Macon’s Volunteer Tour Guides—a great group of people who thoroughly
enjoy their
“work” (and who only refr to it as “fun”).
Here are the key things
to know:
Training—attend
a fascinating lecture and presentation on
February 19, a walk-around with our Ranger/Historian on February 26,
and a
review and party on March 4. Get a little comfortable with the material
and key
dates, tag along on tours, review it with the Ranger, and get plugged
into the
schedule. Simple as that.
Commitment—Tours
run from mid-April until mid-October. Each
Guide does two tours (about 45 minutes each) on dates and at times you
basically select. Once a week is great, but there is a lot of
flexibility built
into the scheduling.
Satisfaction—You
have to learn a certain minimum as a
starting point, but the Guides never stop learning—the more you know,
the more
awesome the Fort becomes. You meet nice, interested people on every
tour, most
of whom are stunned at how well preserved the Fort is and how it brings
to life
so many key events in American history.
Give John Rhodes a call at 252-393-7313 (email
croatan2@coastalnet.com), or call the Fort at 252-726-3775 and come to
the
first session at park headquarters (across from the Coast Guard
Station) to see
for yourself at 9:00
on
February 19. No obligation, but you’ll probably love becoming a part of
history!!
