We have a Maritime Museum in Beaufort,
N.C. where you can view Blackbeard's artifacts, hear stories about old
time at sea rescues, see a display of a silver clipper boat and even more!
The museum's main objective is to teach the maritime natural and cultural
history of the area. The museum currently has 100 volunteers and
employs 18 paid staff members. While touring the museum, you will
view fossils, decoys, hand tools, and over 5,000 seashells. You'll
be fascinated by the saltwater aquariums! The volunteers and staff
members will tell you about the full size water craft and about the models
of ships.
Just arrived are the artifacts from
Blackbeard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. The ship was found in
1996, just two miles off shore from Beaufort. Divers from the museum
are bringing the things discovered from the ship for the public to view.
There are twenty-one cannons, and pieces of gold that have been recovered.
The museum has a second location across the street called the "Harvey W.
Smith Watercraft Center." The Wooden Boat Show is held at this location
each summer. You can also take boat building classes there year around.
Plans for a third location are also planned! A display of the new
project and building is in the main lobby of the Maritime Museum.
One of the things you'll enjoy most
at the Maritime Museum is it's Summer Science School. You can take
classes in underwater archaeology, fishing, fossils, seashore life, kayaking,
and sailing. In other classes, open to all ages, you can stargaze,
do bird watching, go on wildflower field trips and even go to Cape Lookout.
You can also sign up for trips sponsored by the museum, to the Panama Canal,
Costa Rica, and other great places. The Maritime Museum's exterior
is built to resemble a coast guard station. The two-story building
has an auditorium, a gift and book shop, a library, and offices and storage
rooms. The museum is funded by state grants, donations, and membership
fees through the "Friends of the Museum." Come enjoy and learn more
about our coastal resources and heritage at the Maritime Museum!
