Footnotes:(1) Research on Murdo McLennan was done by Ruth Glegg of Banchory, Scotland. Ruth's extensive research covers all of Murdo's descendants, done for a family reunion in 1999 on the Centennial of Mudro's death. Census documents described Murdo as "Crofter [tenant farmer], farmer, forester, Teacher of Music and Free Church Precentor [choir director]." Mudro was the son of Kenneth McClennan (b. 1762[?] in Urray, Ross and Cromarty; d. before 1841), a woolen weaver, and Kathrineea McKenzie (b. Unkn in Unkn; d. between 1841 and 1851 in Contin[?]) Kenneth and Kathrineea had eight children between 1788 and 1808, Murdock being the last. The information on the McLennans was presented to Dwight and Karen Rettie by Ruth Glegg at her home "Bridge of Bennie" in Banchory on July 17, 2002. The tombstone pictured was new in 1999, redone for a reunion of his descendants in that Centennial year of his death. The inscription reads: "In Memory of Murdo McLennan, crofter [a tenant farmer], Jamestown, Who died 31st May 1899, Aged 90 years and his [second] wife Mary Collan, who died 11th March, 1900, Aged 78 years." Rettie ancestors were children of Murdo's first wife Jane McDonald. See note (3) below.
(2) According to Ruth Glegg members of the family have used spellings of the name to include: McLennon, McLennan, McLenan, McLeanen and MacLennan, and some of them have different versions on birth, marriage, and death records for the same person.
(3) Murdo's first wife, Jane McDonald died in 1842 at age 32. They had four children: Alexander (b. 1835), Eliza Downie (b. 1836), Kenneth (b. 1838), and Mary (b. 1840). Only Mary, Jane Cardno Rettie's mother, is included here. Murdo then married Mary Gollan (b.1822, d. 1901) in 1846, with whom he had eight additional children: Isabella (b. 1849), Dinah (b. 1851), Catherine (b. 1854), Helen (b. 1856), Jane (b. 1859), Roderick (b. 1861), Murdo (b. 1864), and John (b. 1866.) None of Murdo's children by Mary Gollan is included here.
(4) William Rettie was the son of William Rettie and Mary Crichton Rettie, whose dates and place of birth are not yet known. Further research on William Rettie's ancestors awaits the doing. However, it is known that in the 1880s William Rettie, while living in Scotland, had an affair with a married woman whose name is now unknown. That relationship produced a son. The son is possibly James John Davidson, "born about 1885, at Peterhead, Scotland. Brother, David, sister, Charlotte. Possibly lived with a Mrs. Rettie. Not sure what connection that could be. [James John] immigrated to Canada about 1906 with brother David. Homesteaded in Saskatchewan. Charlotte remained in Scotland? or England?" [The source of this quotation is James Davidson of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, who posted a query on the Internet at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Rettie::scotland::29917.html.] William Rettie's Scottish son did attend his father's funeral in Fossil, Oregon, in 1924. Based on that fact it seems likely he must have then been living in western Canada or the U.S., and perhaps had been in periodic contact with his father or Mrs. (Jane?) Rettie. He then disappeared and his existence was treated as a deep family secret until the late 1960s, after the death of James Cardno Rettie, when Dwight's mother told him about his father's half-brother. Dwight's sister Jo (Morgan) says she remembers learning of the half-brother directly from her father, perhaps in the early or mid-1960s. Though there were still children of William Rettie living at that time, none would discuss their half-brother, if they knew any of the details about him. None of that generation remained alive in 2002.
